INTERVIEW WITH DISAFFECTED (PROGRESSIVE DEATH METAL)

1. How would you describe your music?

Music categorization is always tricky. Some songs might fall under different genres or sub genres. In any case, Disaffected is often considered a Progressive Death Metal Band. Which is, broadly speaking, a definition we are comfortable with. Our music also has touches of other genres but, as a whole, Progressive Death Metal might be the best frame.

2. What gave you the idea for the single title?

Our lyrics are generally about human experiences, dreams and illusions. In this record we also tried a more historical approach, writing about past facts (for example, the fall of Constantinople (The Moon, the Eagle and the Golden Apple), or the Battle of the Milvian Bridge (Conquer by This). In the case of our single, Glossolalia, the idea sprung from another human experience: to "speak in tongues". A phenomenon through which a person enters a trance and starts to speak in languages he or she does not know about.

3. Do you work together with others in the writing process?

Yes. We work as a band during the writing process. Bruno shows up with a couple of riffs and the whole band will work on them to eventually complete a song.

4. How much time to do you take record songs?

We take a lot of time. Progressive music requires a great amount of attention to all the details. Every small part counts. So we usually take our time. Our fans respect and appreciate this approach we have. Every song is thoroughly thought, built and executed. We could never just drop a record every year or even every two years. But, in the end, we are always very happy with what we achieve. And the fans too. They prefer to wait a while longer but have a real Disaffected album.

5. Does this release differ from past music releases? How?

Yes. The Trinity Threshold is a lighter record than Rebirth, in the way that the songs are all a bit shorter and a bit more direct. The complexity of our music is still there yet it is now wrapped in a slightly different fashion. If you listen to all 3 records, you will easily say they are all Disaffected albums, although they have significant different feelings to them.

6. Do you like to change it up for each release with lyrical themes?

The main issues will always be exploring human experiences, dreams and illusions. And since there is always so much about a person as and individual or the human race as a whole, the actual lyric is never the same. In any case, yes, we do like to try different approaches in every release. The Trinity Threshold, for example, has a lot of historical detail - which Rebirth and Vast did not have.

7. Where do you draw your influences and inspirations from?

Mainly from life itself. Our experiences as persons, as families, or as a band. There is an infinite sea of possibilities in each of those experiences.

8. What has been the most enjoyable thing you have done as a musician/singer?

Getting our music across to people. That is defiantly the best part of being a musician. Sharing your creativity, experience and feelings with the listener. Even last weekend, at a gig, we where surprised to meet a few longtime fans which knew every single detail of all our records. They had taken the time to explore our music, knew our lyrics and our history. That is very rewarding.

9. What do you feel is the biggest challenge going forward with your career?

We don´t really look much into the future. So, there are no big challenges up ahead. We appreciate our band and our music every day, in the present. The future is always uncertain. As long as we all have good health we are certain we will keep on composing, recording and then playing live. If all goes well, we will keep on spreading our music and getting to play to larger audiences. That is fine.

10. What do you enjoy outside of music?

Every member of Disaffected has quite a different character from the next member. In any case, we can safely say that we all enjoy cinema, travelling and reading. Speaking of which, thank you for reading this interview and for your time and interest in Disaffected!
